Death basketball? This is the unique shit and I was immediately on board with whatever else this movie had in store for me, which thankfully turned out to be a whole lot more wild shit.Įscape from LA is full of weird one off moments that are completely ridiculous but consistently entertaining.
I’ve seen people fight to the death in front of a crowd. The movie posits that it’s far more interesting to watch a tense basketball scene rather than another fight to the death between two people. He has to run back and forth across a court, sinking a basket every 10 seconds. No this time he has to play basketball real well so he doesn’t get killed. Here he is put in front of a crowd in another life or death situation, only this time it’s not centered on fighting. In the first movie, there is a sequence where Snake is put in front of a crowd of people and has to fight someone else to the death for their entertainment. Oh yeah this is a good time to mention that this movie is bat-shit insane. That execution is almost always the most ludicrous decision the movie could make. It’s the same premise but executed differently. If he doesn’t go into dangerous territory that an opening narration has told us is very, very hard to escape from, he will not be saved by this injected plot device. Snake Plissken (Kurt Motherfuckin’ Russell) is captured and injected with something that will kill him in a matter of hours. If it weren’t for a few references to the previous film, LA could work perfectly as a remake of NY rather than a sequel. Internet…why have you been lying me to this whole time!?
For almost 25 years, I’ve heard so many negative things and I’ve seen it appear on many “Worst Movie Sequel” lists so I figured it wasn’t worth my time. It’s one of my only viewing gaps in John Carpenter’s filmography. I’ve been a fan of Escape from New York for a good while but I never bothered watching its 1996 sequel Escape from LA.
